RECAP FROM THE JANUARY UNBROKEN SERIES:

Week One:  Lessons from the Raft
January 7-8, John Ortberg

How do you hold on when everything around you says to give up? When Louis Zamperini's plane was shot down in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, he survived many hardships, including starvation, shark attacks and even enemy fire. The two other survivors each responded to their circumstances in different ways. Every day, life is a test. How we respond to those troubles determines who we are and offers opportunities for the greatest growth in character. "God's address is at the end of our rope" (Dallas Willard). When we are on the raft, at the end of our rope, we become aware of our intense dependence on God -- our illusion of self-sufficiency is shattered. We desperately need God, but in that need for God, he gives us hope.

Challenge: How do you respond to life's challenges? What happens when life calms down? Is hope growing in you this week?

Romans 5:3-5, Proverbs 24:10, Proverbs 17:3, Revelation 3:17, Romans 8:21-26, Romans 5:5-7, Romans 8:37-39

Week Two:  Lessons from Prison
January 14-15, John Ortberg

As a prisoner of war, Louis endured humiliation, torture, and endless suffering. God's desire is to bring healing to individuals who have been hurt and abused. Through forgiveness, we can be set free from the prison of hated and bitterness that often results from the pains we endure. But forgiveness is not always easy. It is a long journey that forces us to look at parts of us we often would rather ignore. Repentence and reconcilliation begins with truth. God brings good out of evil.

Challenge: What step of love can you take towards someone who has hurt you? Who do you need to reconcile with? Who does your  heart need to forgive?

Ephesians 6:12, Matthew 5:7, Luke 6:27, John 3:16, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Romans 8:28, Matthew 18:50
